Auto Parts Dealer and Businesswoman Arrested for Smuggling Opioids and Cocaine in Custard Bound for the UK
NDLEA officers at the export shed of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos intercepted a cargo destined for the United Kingdom on Friday, 6th September 2024. A thorough search of the consignment revealed 924 bottles of codeine-based syrup weighing 135.70 kg and 5,250 tablets of Rohypnol concealed within cartons of foodstuffs.
A statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, indicated that the freight agent, Owojori Olanrewaju Sunday, who presented the cargo for export, was promptly arrested.
‘’Further investigation led to the arrest of another suspect, Adewunmi Akeem Temitope, who claimed that his mother, 58-year-old Mrs. Adewunmi Adebola Dorcas sent the consignment to him from Ibadan to deliver to the agent. A follow-up operation on Saturday 7th September led to the arrest of Mrs Adewunmi in Ibadan where she deals in foodstuffs and cargo export.
In his statement, the agent Owojori confessed that he has been working for Mrs Adewunmi to export cargoes to the UK, adding that he was paid N2,411,000.00 for the job, while he was paid N2.1million for a similar consignment handled for the businesswoman earlier.”
In the same vein, NDLEA operatives at the same export shed of Lagos airport on Wednesday, 11th September intercepted several cartons of auto spare parts and Checkers powder custard destined for Congo Brazzaville on Ethiopian Airlines. Babafemi noted that a thorough search of the cargo resulted in the discovery of 300 grams of cocaine concealed within the containers of Checkers powder custard that were packed alongside some auto parts.
‘’A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the sender of the consignment, Arinze Ora, who deals in auto parts at Shop 12, Block 7 Aspanda Trade Fair Auto Parts Wing, Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos.”
Meanwhile, operatives of a Special Operations Unit of the NDLEA on Tuesday, 10th September, arrested two brothers: Ikechukwu Ikeabba and Ugochukwu Ikeabba, who are sponsors of drug traffickers specialising in exporting drugs by ingestion to Vietnam. Their arrest followed a diligent investigation into an earlier arrest of an Onitsha, Anambra State-based businessman, Ibeanusi Solomon Nosike, who excreted 68 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.282 kilograms after a 12-day observation period. He was apprehended at the local terminal of the Lagos airport by NDLEA operatives.
The 36-year-old Ibeanusi was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, 8th August 2024, at the old domestic terminal of the Lagos airport while attempting to board the first flight from Lagos to Abuja, where he was scheduled to join a Qatar Airways flight to Vietnam at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, at around 10 am the same day.

After four days under observation, Mbadugha had ingested a total of 88 wraps of the illicit drug, with a gross weight of 1.710 kilograms.
At the time of the arrest of the two kingpins, the Ikeabba brothers were found in possession of 87 wraps of cocaine dummies used for training potential swallowers.

‘You’re More Interested In Milking A Dying Economy’ – Peter Obi tackles FG Over Cybersecurity Levy
The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has criticized the Federal Government for the recent cybersecurity levy directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has criticized the Federal Government for the recent cybersecurity levy directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

‘You’re More Interested In Milking A Dying Economy’ – Peter Obi tackles FG Over Cybersecurity Levy
Afric Showbiz stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had instructed all financial institutions, such as commercial banks, merchant banks, non-interest banks, payment service banks, and mobile money operators, to apply a 0.5% cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions.
The action aligns with the updated Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2024. According to a circular, the directive mandates the levy’s application at the beginning of electronic transfers. The deducted sum will appear in the customer’s account as a “Cybersecurity Levy.” Peter Obi, in a statement using his X handle, criticized the introduction of the levy during a challenging economic period, suggesting that the government prioritizes exploiting a struggling economy over fostering its revival and development.
The ex-Governor of Anambra State highlighted that the Cybersecurity Levy contradicts the Government’s pledge to lower taxes and simplify the tax structure. Peter Obi further stated that measures like the Cybersecurity Levy push citizens into poverty and diminish the country’s economic competitiveness.
He said, “The introduction of yet another tax, in the form of Cybersecurity Levy, on Nigerians who are already suffering severe economic distress is further proof that the government is more interested in milking a dying economy instead of nurturing it to recovery and growth. This does not only amount to multiple taxation on banking transactions, which are already subject to various other taxes including stamp duties but negates the Government’s avowed commitment to reduce the number of taxes and streamline the tax system.
“The imposition of a Cybersecurity Levy on bank transactions is particularly sad given that the tax is on the trading capital of businesses and not on their profit hence will further erode whatever is left of their remaining capital, after the impact of the Naira devaluation and high inflation rate. It is inconceivable to expect the suffering citizens of Nigeria to separately fund all activities of the government.
“Policies such as this not only impoverish the citizens but make the country’s economic environment less competitive. At a time when the government should be reducing taxes to curb inflation, the government is instead introducing new taxes. And when did the office of the NSA become a revenue collecting centre? And why should that purely national security office receive returns on a specific tax as stated in the new cybersecurity law?”
