Fatal Prison Break Shootout Claims Lives of Five Inmates and Three Guards
Five prisoners said to be from Somalia’s Al-Shabaab jihadist group and three wardens were killed in a hail of gunfire during an attempted breakout from the main prison in the capital Mogadishu on Saturday, according to prison authorities and witnesses.

Five prisoners said to be from Somalia’s Al-Shabaab jihadist group and three wardens were killed in a hail of gunfire during an attempted breakout from the main prison in the capital Mogadishu on Saturday, according to prison authorities and witnesses.
Detained members of the Al-Qaeda-linked group, which has been carrying out a bloody insurgency for years, succeeded in acquiring weapons and initiated what seemed to be a well-coordinated attempt to flee the prison, as per security sources.
“Violent elements tried to stir terror in the central prison,” Colonel Abdiqani Khalaf, spokesman for the Somali Custodian Corps, said at a brief press conference, adding that the situation has now returned to normal.
“Five prisoners and three soldiers died and 18 other prisoners and three soldiers were wounded,” he said.
“Investigations are ongoing and the wounded are being treated now.”
Witnesses residing near the compound said they heard grenade explosions and machine gunshots.
Al-Shabaab has conducted several bombings and attacks in Mogadishu and other regions of the unstable country, with fewer incidents reported in recent months.
“There was an explosion inside the prison and a heavy exchange of gunfire followed,” said witness Abdirahman Ali.
“I was very close to the prison when the incident occurred and I saw police enforcements entering the prison a few minutes after the gunfire broke out,” he said.
Another witness, Shuceyb Ahmed, also reported hearing grenade blasts and gunfire.
“I called my brother who is a member of the prison guards, and he told me that several Al-Shabaab inmates secretly obtained weapons and grenades and tried to escape.”
Somali National News Agency (SONNA) published images of the deceased bodies of the five suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen.
Somali Custodial Corps is a division of the security forces tasked with managing prisons in the nation.
Al-Shabaab has been in conflict with the weak central government in Mogadishu for over 17 years.
The government has partnered with local clan militias to combat the Islamist insurgents, backed by an African Union force and US air strikes.
Despite these efforts, the operation has faced challenges, as Al-Shabaab recently claimed control of various areas in the country’s center.

Two Children Found Dead, Parents Arrested
A couple from Oklahoma, USA were arrested this month after their two young children were found covered in excrement in a home so horrific that authorities were forced to wear hazmat suits when they entered, according to police.

A couple from Oklahoma, USA were arrested this month after their two young children were found covered in excrement in a home so horrific that authorities were forced to wear hazmat suits when they entered, according to police.
On September 12, three children under the age of five were rescued from a filthy home and Dakota Dodd, 24, and Aubrianna Freeman, 22, were arrested on child neglect charges.
Oklahoma City police said officers arrived at the home after a concerned neighbour called to report the incident.
Dodd led police to a bedroom where they reportedly found the children, ages 3 and 4, with dried excrement on them.
The children’s mother faces child neglect charges, police said.
“There was faeces on the walls, faeces on the children. It was an absolutely disgusting scene,” Oklahoma City Police Master Sgt. Gary Knight told KOCO.
“Upon entry, officers described being almost overwhelmed by the smell of faeces and urine inside the residence.”
The young victims had “faeces accumulated on their fingernails, palms, feet, legs and face,” according to a police report obtained by Law and Crime.
The report by Law and Crime details horrific conditions throughout the home, including “piles of what appeared to be human faeces” on the second floor and a bedroom floor “covered in multiple piles of smeared and flattened human faeces,” according to the outlet.
KOCO reported that due to the conditions being so disgusting, investigators later wore hazmat suits when they investigated the crime scene.
Dodd, who is reportedly the children’s stepfather, allegedly admitted to police that he locked the children in the dirty room for more than 12 hours a day so that Freeman, their mother, could sleep and to “keep the children safe because of the neighbourhood,” News 9 reported, citing the police report.
An 11-month-old girl, Dodd’s biological daughter, was also removed from the home, the station reported.
The neighbour who reported the alleged neglect told News 9 she saw the naked children at the window.
“They looked at me like, ‘Help me,’” Barbara North said.
“They had shit all over their faces, hands and mouths,” North added.
Dodd and Freeman have been charged with five counts of child neglect, Law and Crime reported.

Iran president says ‘not looking for war’ with Israel
President Masoud Pezeshkian insisted Wednesday that Iran was “not looking for war” but pledged a stronger response if Israel retaliates for its missile attack.

President Masoud Pezeshkian insisted Wednesday that Iran was “not looking for war” but pledged a stronger response if Israel retaliates for its missile attack.
“If it (Israel) wants to react, we will have a stronger response, this is what the Islamic Republic is committed to,” Pezeshkian said in a joint press conference with Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, in Doha.
“We are not looking for war, it is Israel that forces us to react,” he said.
On Tuesday, Iran launched approximately 200 missiles, including hypersonic weapons, towards Israel. This attack prompted many Israeli civilians to seek shelter. Israel successfully intercepted most of the missiles, but two people sustained minor injuries from shrapnel. One of the missiles caused damage to a school building.
“The dirty goal of the Zionist regime is to cause insecurity and spread crisis in the region,” Pezeshkian said.
“What we want from US and European countries is to tell the entity they have planted in the region (Israel) to stop the bloodshed.”
The Israeli military reported that several Iranian missiles landed on air force bases on Wednesday, but they did not cause any damage.
Sheikh Tamim warned that Israel was drawing the region to the “brink of the abyss” with its attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The emir denounced Israel’s continued attacks on the Gaza Strip and stated that Doha would continue working to achieve a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Hamas’s October 7 attacks sparked the current war.

DSS Replaces President Tinubu’s Chief Security Officer
The Department of State Services (DSS) has replaced Adegboyega Fasasi as Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Bola Tinubu.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has replaced Adegboyega Fasasi as Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Bola Tinubu.
He has been succeeded by Rasheed Atanda Lawal, a Deputy Director of the DSS. Presidential sources suggest Fasasi was reassigned to undergo professional training.
“At least there’s a reason for his removal, and you can’t really premise that on any particular scandal,” a source said.
The DSS Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, reportedly requested President Tinubu to release Fasasi for a strategic course. This request comes amidst a common practice for new DSS leadership to reorganize security postings, particularly within the Presidency, according to sources.
“The angle I want us to actually look at it from is the fact that such exercise as this ‘change of guards’ usually happens when the DSS gets a new DG… the new DG will always prefer to have his own trusted men on critical beats,” the source added.
No official statement has been released confirming personnel changes in the CSO’s office as of Sunday evening.
