Dr. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra Governor, suggests that adopting home or backyard gardening can assist families in dealing with the increasing cost of living.
Soludo, the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, offered this advice during her meeting with the Anambra State Female Farmers and Businesswomen in Awka. She emphasized that traditional home gardening methods were crucial in the past as they offered a consistent source of nutrition, reduced reliance on costly commercial food items, and promoted healthier eating habits by encouraging the consumption of organically grown produce to enhance family food security.
“Economic circumstances do not completely determine healthy living practices, including the choice of what we consume to keep the body in good shape.

“We also need to dispel the notion that eating healthy is about eating expensive food products.

“You only need to go to the small farm behind your house to pick up what the body needs to be healthy.

“This is why I am encouraging families to embrace backyard or home gardens and this is in line with the state government’s agricultural agenda.

“Those who live in areas without enough land for subsistence farming purposes can adopt sack farming, which does not cost anything to set up.

“By having such farms around the house, households can have easier and healthier alternatives, cut down their costs of living and boost the green environment.”
Esther Onyekesi, Leader of Anambra State Female Farmers and Businesswomen, emphasized the critical role of women in food production and advocated for providing them with essential support. She urged women to engage in backyard farming to strengthen food security, citing the recent increase in food prices as a motivation for everyone to embrace farming. Onyekesi also praised the governor’s wife for her assistance to women’s groups in the state.
