The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about fake diabetes drugs circulating since 2022 globally.

The health organization specifically highlighted issues with fake drugs in the UK, the US, and Brazil since October 2023.

The problem revolves around Ozempic, a drug containing semaglutide approved in the EU for type 2 diabetes treatment.

The counterfeit version closely resembles the genuine drug and is increasingly used for weight loss due to its appetite-suppressing properties.

However, these fake medications may lack the correct dosage of active ingredients, posing risks of uncontrolled blood sugar levels in diabetic patients, as per the WHO.

The counterfeit drugs could also contain harmful substances, according to the WHO.

The WHO advised healthcare professionals, pharmacists, regulatory bodies, and the public to remain vigilant.

It recommended purchasing medications only with a prescription from physical pharmacies, not online.

Patients were urged to ensure that insulin pen dosage markings are clear, the label is accurate, and the packaging does not contain any errors.

Afrobeats star Asake has taken his father, Fatai Odunsi, to a specialist hospital in Ikoyi.

Asake Alleged Dad

According to a source, Chinese experts are currently providing medical care for him there. When Sunday Scoop reached out to one of Odunsi’s neighbors, she confirmed that he is indeed receiving treatment at this facility. This neighbor had previously guided our correspondent to Asake’s childhood home in Iga Idunganran, Isale Eko, during a visit last Saturday.

Speaking in the local Isale Eko parlance (now translated into English), she stated, “Call me again around 6:30 pm. By then, I should have gone to their house, so I would be able to give you more information on what you asked.”

When our correspondent reached out to her again around 7 pm, she confirmed the news, saying, “I have confirmed from his (Odunsi’s) wife that he has been admitted to a specialist hospital in Ikoyi where Chinese experts are currently attending to him.”

According to a source close to Asake’s management, the situation with his daughter Zeenat and her mother was simply a mistake. The source, who spoke to Sunday Scoop anonymously, said Asake is now taking care of his financial responsibilities towards both his father and daughter. However, they weren’t sure if Asake would be getting back together with Zeenat’s mother or providing financial support to her.

The entire thing was an oversight, but all has been sorted. He has reunited with his family and promised to give them whatever they would need to keep him going. To the best of my knowledge, he has begun fulfilling the promises he made and that is why there is now calm. I have no knowledge of what has or will happen to the baby mama; what I know is what I have told you”, the source said.

Odunsi, in a widely shared video, revealed that after reconciling with Asake, they reached an agreement. Asake promised to buy Odunsi a new house and cover his medical bills. Real estate agents are already looking for the perfect property. Odunsi also confirmed that Asake will take full responsibility for his 11-year-old daughter, Zeenat. However, Odunsi didn’t say anything about Asake getting back together with Zeenat’s mother or offering her any support.

Brazil has recorded the world’s first Oropouche virus deaths, the country’s health ministry said Thursday, after two women died of the illness spread by infected flies and mosquitoes.

The women from the state of Bahia in northeast Brazil were “under 30 years old, with no comorbidities, but who had signs and symptoms similar to a severe case of dengue,” the ministry said in a statement.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website states there are currently known outbreaks of Oropouche in parts of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Peru.

The Brazil health ministry said there have been 7,236 cases of Oropouche infection recorded in 2024, with the majority being reported out of the states of Amazonas and Rondonia.

According to the CDC, symptoms of Oropouche viral infection usually begin four to eight days after being bitten.

Symptoms typically last for three to six days, the health agency said, with similar symptoms to dengue, such as fever, muscle aches, stiff joints, headache, vomiting, nausea, chills or sensitivity to light.

Severe cases can result in life-threatening complications such as meningitis.

Oropouche was first isolated in Brazil in 1960, according to the health ministry.

Most cases have been reported in the Amazon region of Brazil but outbreaks and isolated cases have been reported elsewhere in Latin America.

US Lab Denies Accusations of Conducting Poison Test on Mohbad

Punch Newspaper investigated the cause of Mohbad’s death, prompting NMS Labs’ denial of conducting any toxicology test.
Allegations at the Coroner’s Court in Lagos implied that NMS Labs had done the toxicology test, but this was contradicted by NMS Labs.

Lagos State officials, including the state’s counsel and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, supported the claim that the test was conducted in the USA during an autopsy process.

NMS Labs clarified to Punch that they did not perform any such test, contrary to statements by Lagos State representatives.

Concerns arose after a pathologist’s report at the Coroner’s Court mentioned the inability to determine Mohbad’s cause of death due to the body’s decomposition.

Omotoso said, “The matter is being handled by the state DNA and Forensic Centre, but they are doing skeletal services, and they have affiliate centres which are three.

“So, if there is an emergency like this one that we have, they will not say they cannot handle it. So, there are three of them in the US and the one handling this particular one is the NMS in Pennsylvania, USA.”

The test results were received in Nigeria around April 2024 and given to a pathologist for analysis.
The pathologist, testifying in court, revealed that the autopsy couldn’t determine Mohbad’s cause of death due to decomposition of the body.

Punch confirmed the locations of NMS Labs in Pennsylvania and Texas during an investigation.
A single email address used by these labs for communication was found on the NMS Labs’ website, and an inquiry was sent to verify if a toxicology test for Mohbad was carried out at their facility.

The inquiry read in part, “I am a journalist from Punch Newspaper in Nigeria, currently working on a story involving the death of Nigerian hip-hop artiste, Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad.

“Following the Lagos State Government’s active interest in the case, the state Commissioner for Information revealed that the government conducted a toxicology test on the late artiste at your facility.

Here is the YouTube Video where he said so at 32:21

“However, conflicting reports have emerged, casting doubt on whether or not the toxicology test indeed took place at your facility. As a journalist committed to factual reporting, I am independently reaching out to your facility to verify the authenticity of this claim. Clarification on this matter will contribute significantly to resolving the discrepancies surrounding the artist’s demise.”

Esther Dede, the Client Services Associate in the Forensics Division at NMS Labs, rejected the state government’s assertion that Mohbad’s toxicology test was carried out at any of their facilities.

Dede said, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient.”

Dede, however, noted, “To maintain our compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations, we would need authorisation from the submitting agency.”

On Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Omotoso, mentioned that the lab’s name was provided to him by the state DNA and Forensic Centre when contacted.

He said, “This was what I was told by the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre officials who took the sample there. We are dealing with the officials of the centre, they have three other labs that they have affiliations with. If they have an emergency, they can go to any of the three labs. I asked which particular one did they go to and they answered it was that one. That means I will have to go and check again because that was what I was told.”

A new outbreak of diphtheria has claimed the lives of more than 40 people, predominantly children, in Kano State.

According to the Daily Trust, several dozen others have been hospitalised due to the disease.

When the publication visited the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) on Wednesday, 28 August 2024, all three wards were filled with patients, and many others were waiting in line to see a doctor.

An anonymous hospital official, who requested to remain unnamed due to media restrictions, reported a high daily death toll from the outbreak.

“For the past two weeks, there have been daily fatalities from this disease,” the official said. “Every day, doctors are seeing a large number of patients. If you visit in the morning or evening, you will find dozens of victims waiting for treatment. The hospital has been continuously busy since the outbreak began,” the official said.

The official explained that the hospital is overwhelmed because many local government area hospitals lack the necessary facilities to manage such cases.

“Most patients are referred here because our facility is the most equipped to handle infectious diseases,” the source added

Samira Danzaki, a mother whose daughter is receiving treatment at the hospital, told the publication that she has been at the facility for two days.

“I brought my daughter here on Sunday after she developed a severe fever and her neck swelled. We were referred to this hospital, and thankfully, she is responding to treatment,” Danzaki said.

Another patient in the queue reported experiencing severe throat problems after initially suffering from catarrh.

“I came here because my condition worsened, and I am now having difficulty with my throat,” the patient said.

When contacted, Samira Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer of the State Hospital Management Board, neither confirmed nor denied the report, the publication stated.

She mentioned that management is holding an emergency meeting regarding the matter and promised to provide a communiqué.
