A video capturing a notable moment between the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, at an event hosted by Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Ibadan on Tuesday, April 29th, has sparked discussion.
The video shows the Ooni's arrival at the event. He then approached the podium to greet other royal figures, such as the Soun of Ogbomosho, who stood to shake his hand. Another monarch seated beside the Soun also stood to greet the Ooni.
However, the Alaafin of Oyo, who was also seated, remained seated and extended his hand to shake hands with the Ooni of Ife.
While some found this unremarkable, others suggest it highlights a perceived rivalry between the two monarchs. Some believe the Alaafin should have stood, given that the Ooni was standing, while others maintain that the Alaafin is not expected to stand for anyone.
