According to a Facebook post by Nollywood practitioner, Chukwudi M. Udokwu, the tragic incident occurred shortly after a successful film shoot. The producer, reportedly impressed by the day's performance, treated the crew to a round of Calypso, a blend of spirit once common in Nigerian markets.

Trouble started hours later when four members of the crew, including Evans and Nnunnu, began vomiting and experiencing severe stomach pain. Initially dismissed as a minor reaction, the symptoms worsened rapidly.

“They thought it was a minor stomach upset,” Udokwu wrote. “It became serious when the pain was unbearable. Before a vehicle could be arranged to take them to hospital, Evans and Nnunnu were already battling for their lives on the ground.”

They were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, where doctors confirmed Evans and Nnunnu dead on arrival. The two others affected were placed on oxygen and are currently receiving treatment.

“This is a black Friday in Nollywood,” Udokwu lamented. “We have lost a young and fast-rising actor and a talented director of photography. This one pains me well.”

In response to the incident, the Imo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of death. A post-mortem will be conducted to provide clarity.

Concerns have been raised over the safety of the drink, Calypso, which, according to reports, has been banned by the Federal Government. Questions are also being asked about how the producer acquired the drink and whether it was expired or adulterated.

“This tragedy underscores the importance of caution,” Udokwu added. “No one can be too careful.”

As the industry mourns, tributes continue to pour in for the deceased, described as talented and hardworking professionals with bright futures ahead of them.
