The Imo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police (CP) Aboki Danjuma, has issued a strong, clear directive aimed at stamping out unacceptable behaviour and promoting ethical policing. In a press release issued on Sunday, 28th September 2025, the CP firmly warned all officers against engaging in unlawful practices that breach citizens' rights, particularly those of young people.
This means that police officers have been explicitly banned from carrying out unlawful phone searches, extortion, harassment, and other forms of rights violations.
CP Danjuma has also restated the strict rule against using unmarked vehicles for patrol duties by tactical units. Even more specifically, he stressed that shuttle buses must not be used for patrols anywhere in the state. If the Command receives any reports of harassment, intimidation, or extortion linked to these banned practices, the complaints will be investigated thoroughly, and the officers responsible will be disciplined.
Furthermore, the Commissioner is tightening the rules around detentions. He warned against the over-detention of suspects, emphasising that their rights are paramount and must always be respected. Any officer who violates constitutional rules and best practices will face sanctions.
To ensure these rules are followed, the CP has ordered all Area Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Unit Commanders to supervise their teams closely. The warning is serious: any officer caught committing misconduct will face severe disciplinary action, and their commanders will be held accountable for failing to supervise them properly. This confirms the Command’s commitment to professionalism, in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.
The Imo State Police Command wants the public to know it is determined to safeguard their rights while maintaining law and order. If you experience any extortion or misconduct, please report it immediately to the Command’s X-Squad Unit or the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on 08148024755 or 08134783532.
