His father, Matt Robinson, who is a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff's Department, reportedly turned him in to the authorities. According to reports, after seeing photos of the suspect released by the FBI, Tyler's father identified his son and helped facilitate his surrender. President Donald Trump, in an interview, stated that a "minister who was involved with law enforcement" was a conduit between the father and the police.

Information from law enforcement officials and the Utah Governor, Spencer Cox, indicates that Robinson's roommate provided investigators with messages from the Discord app in which Robinson allegedly discussed details related to the crime, such as retrieving a rifle and leaving it wrapped in a towel. Family members also told investigators that Robinson had become "more political in recent years" and had spoken negatively about Kirk's views at a family dinner.

Tyler Robinson is a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College and briefly attended Utah State University. His mother, Amber, works for Intermountain Support Coordination Services. A neighbor described him as "very respectful and quiet."
