Anthony Joshua agrees to fight Russian who wrestles bears in comeback bout

Joshua's Crazy Comeback: Fighting the Russian Who Wrestles Bears

Anthony Joshua could return to the ring in early 2026 against Russian heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov, a fighter known for his extreme conditioning, including wrestling bears and taking sledgehammer hits to the abdomen.

This potential opponent is part of Joshua's expected return against a lower-key fighter following a year-long absence. Joshua hasn't fought since his September knockout loss to Daniel Dubois and used the time off to recover from elbow surgery, maintaining his hope for a future clash with Tyson Fury.

The 6-foot-5 Makhmudov is a fearsome presence who was undefeated at 18-0 until he lost to Agit Kabayel in December 2023. His unusual training footage, showing him grappling with a bear and getting hit by sledgehammers, makes him a captivating, if terrifying, potential comeback opponent for the two-time champion.

Asked why the opportunity to fight Joshua might not come his way even in the event of putting away the big Russian, Allen added:

"Because Makhmudov is a much scarier looking guy than me. He might look more of a threat. That’s what I think happens if the result goes that way."

Makhmudov has also been in contact with Joshua, claiming the two have agreed a fight if he leaves Sheffield with a win this weekend.

"I hope I will get a good opportunity with the next win," he told talkSPORT.com. “By the way, Joshua told me on Instagram that if I win this fight, then I will fight with him. He said next year we can do it, Inshallah.”
