Mohbad's family bans widow from using his surname

The family of the late singer, Mohbad, has told his widow, Wunmi, that she is no longer allowed to use their surname.

Wunmi has been formally stopped from using Aloba, her late husband's family name, until a DNA test confirms the paternity of their son, Liam.

This decision comes amid the ongoing disagreement with Wunmi over the baby's parentage, following Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.

Mohbad died after being given an injection by a nurse's assistant. Following a public outcry, his body was dug up for an autopsy.

In May 2025, the investigation hit a snag when pathologists reported they could not determine the cause of Mohbad’s death.

However, in a new twist, the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, jointly signed an official statement which prevents Wunmi from using the family name.

While arguing that Omowunmi was not legally married to Mohbad, they noted that:

“For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed”.

The Aloba family also named Oladayo Ogungbe as the only person authorised to legally represent them for the DNA case and matters concerning Mohbad's assets (his estate).

Meanwhile, Wahab Shittu will continue to deal with the investigating authorities regarding Mohbad’s death.

The statement clarified that both the child and Wunmi would be part of the process of managing Mohbad's estate only after the DNA test proves that Liam is Mohbad's biological son.
