British-Nigerian star Wunmi Mosaku has earned her first Oscar nomination for her role in the vampire film Sinners. She is up for Best Supporting Actress against stars like Elle Fanning and Teyana Taylor. In the music categories, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood is nominated for his score for One Battle After Another, marking his third time being up for an Academy Award.
There was a bit of a shock as Irish actor Paul Mescal was left out of the Best Supporting Actor list for his role in Hamnet, despite many people thinking he was a dead cert. Instead, the list features names like Sean Penn, Jacob Elordi, and Delroy Lindo.
Even though Mescal missed out, his co-star Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner for Best Actress for her role as Shakespeare’s wife. She has already picked up several big trophies this year, including a Golden Globe. Director Chloé Zhao is also expected to do well in the Best Director category, while Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet are the ones to watch for Best Actor.
The 97th Academy Awards will be held in Hollywood on 15 March, with comedian Conan O’Brien hosting the show.
