Pieter Mulier has been named the new creative boss at Versace, according to the brand's owner, Prada. The move brings the 46-year-old Belgian designer back together with his long-time partner, Raf Simons.

Mulier, who recently spent five years at Alaïa, takes over from Dario Vitale. Vitale left the role unexpectedly in December after only nine months, having originally succeeded Donatella Versace.

Starting his new job on 1 July, Mulier will reunite with fellow Belgian designer Simons, who has been co-designing at Prada since 2020.

Prada bought Versace from Capri Holdings last year for €1.25 billion, aiming to refresh the label after it struggled under its previous American owners. Mulier has spent much of his career working alongside Simons at major fashion houses like Jil Sander, Christian Dior, and Calvin Klein.

“We believe that he can truly unlock Versace’s full potential and that he will be able to engage in a fruitful dialogue with the brand’s strong legacy,” Lorenzo Bertelli, the head of Versace, said in a statement.

Mulier joined Alaïa in 2021, becoming the first creative lead since the death of its founder, Azzedine Alaïa. The brand was famous in the 1990s for "body-con" clothes made from tight, knitted fabrics.

At the label, the Belgian designer used his architecture background to create bold, structural outfits. His work earned him the International Designer of the Year prize at the CFDA Awards last year.

He also designed several "must-have" items, including a studded ballet flat and the long "Le Teckel" (Dachshund) bag. These popular pieces helped put both Mulier and the Alaïa brand back at the heart of the fashion industry.

Mulier will show his final collection for Alaïa this March at Paris Fashion Week
