NECO Common Entrance: Girls Lead as 58,187 Sit Exam

Girls Lead As 58,187 Sit NECO Common Entrance Examination

A total of 58,187 candidates sat the 2026 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) on Saturday. The exam, conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO), determines admission into Federal Government Colleges across Nigeria.

The registrar of NECO, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, shared the details while speaking to journalists in Abuja, having monitored the assessment alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad.

Prof. Wushishi revealed that female candidates outnumbered males this year, with over 31,000 girls taking part compared to around 26,000 boys.

He noted that this trend reflects significant progress in efforts to promote girls' education across the country, adding that sustained advocacy by the Ministry of Education was yielding positive results.

“I think this reflects the efforts of the ministry in promoting girl-child education and shows that positive results are being achieved in that regard,” he said.
He also noted that total candidate numbers had fallen compared to 2025, when 64,578 candidates sat the exam.
Despite the slight drop in turnout, Prof. Wushishi said the assessment ran smoothly nationwide, with reports indicating a largely hitch-free process.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, expressed her satisfaction with how the exam was managed after visiting selected test centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The minister commended the candidates for their orderly behaviour and praised invigilators and officials across the visited centres for strictly adhering to examination guidelines.
Speaking afterwards, Prof. Ahmad confirmed that the exam had commenced on schedule and proceeded in an organised, peaceful manner.
“We have been to three schools and I am happy with the conduct of the examinations in all the three schools,” she said.
She added that the candidates were well-behaved and properly seated, and that the exam had started promptly on schedule across all the centres she visited.
