Nicki Minaj reveals she has an Igbo name

Nicki Minaj, the well-known rapper whose full name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, has confirmed that she possesses an Igbo name.

The music star verified that her given name, Onika, is the Trinidadian version, or derivation, of the Igbo name Onyekachi.

Minaj made this confirmation while responding to a fan's post. The fan was praising her for recently speaking at the United Nations about the violence faced by Christians in Nigeria. The fan suggested that Minaj's first name, Onika—which they claimed meant "Who is greater than God"—showed she was destined to do important things, like speaking out against injustice.

The fan shared a picture on X (formerly Twitter) that explained the meaning and variations of Minaj's first name, writing: "The name Onika means ‘continued belief in a supreme being who holds ultimate authority and surpasses all others in greatness.’"
