Super Mario Manga Man Kazuki Motoyama Dies at 69

Kazuki Motoyama

The creator of the Super Mario Manga Series, Kazuki Motoyama, passed away aged 69 earlier this week.

His sister, Lisa Motoyama, shared the news via a post on Facebook. The reason for his death has not yet been given.

The Super Mario manga series features one of the most iconic video game characters and ran from December 1988 to September 1998. The rest of the issues came out in the related magazine, the Deluxe BomBom, totalling 183 issues. These are now considered a bittersweet historical relic.

The series, written and drawn by Motoyama, first appeared in the Kodansha anthology magazine Comic BomBom in 1988 and included Mario's adventures from games like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64. Motoyama's work on the Super Mario franchise was highly regarded not just for its contribution but also for the meta-humour he infused into the Nintendo world.
