Trump stops Nigerians and others from getting US citizenship or green cards

Trump Administration Suspends Legal Immigration from Nigeria and Others
Donald Trump (President of the United States)
The US government has temporarily stopped processing green card and citizenship applications for people from Nigeria and several other countries.

According to a CBS News report, this pause affects legal immigration applications managed by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It mainly targets immigrants from certain African and Asian nations. Many of those affected already live legally in the US and were trying to change their immigration status or become American citizens.

Earlier in December, the Trump administration told USCIS to freeze all immigration requests from 19 countries. This followed a shooting in Washington DC involving an Afghan national. Because of that incident, the government also stopped deciding on asylum cases and paused all visa applications for Afghans.

On Tuesday, President Trump added 20 more countries to the travel ban. This completely stops people from five nations from entering and puts partial limits on 15 others.

A US official told CBS News that USCIS has now extended the freeze on immigration cases to include these new countries.
