Nigeria Remains 26th Globally, Third in Africa in June FIFA Rankings Update
The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, have maintained 26th place in the latest FIFA World Rankings published on Thursday, following an encouraging international break under head coach Eric Chelle.
The three-time African champions remain the continent's third-highest ranked side, despite a mixed run of fixtures that saw them secure victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, draw with Poland, and suffer a narrow defeat against Portugal.
Nigeria put in an impressive performance at the Unity Cup in London, beating Zimbabwe 2-0 before cruising to a 3-0 victory over Jamaica to lift the invitational trophy. Chelle’s men then continued their preparations with a hard-fought 2-2 draw away to Poland, before concluding the window with a 2-1 loss to Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday evening.
Despite falling short against the UEFA Nations League holders, the Super Eagles held their ground in the global standings, reflecting the consistency the squad has developed since Chelle took the reins.
The latest update offers a timely boost for Chelle and his players as they build momentum ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and future international fixtures.
