Nigerian singer and dancer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has responded after a social media user suggested he should retire from music because of his age.
The comment came after an X user shared a clip from one of his music videos and argued that the singer, whom they described as “almost 50”, should no longer be making Afrobeats music. The user added that it was time for him to retire.
However, media personality Do2dtun disagreed. He pointed out that global stars such as Celine Dion, Shakira, Beyoncé and members of Backstreet Boys are older than Mr P and remain active in music. He described the remark as “ageist.”
“Peter is 44, but you dimwits are so ageist that you don’t even know what you bring down in the name of clicks,” Do2dtun wrote
Let's change the approach entirely. Here is a cleaner, more fluid, and narrative rewrite without the rigid block format and heavy-handed subheadings:
During a recent appearance on Do2dtun’s platform, Peter "Mr P" Okoye addressed the ongoing narrative surrounding his age, claiming that those urging him to retire are simply disgruntled fans bitter over the former P-Square group's split.
He called out the blatant double standard among Nigerian music consumers, questioning why local critics eagerly celebrate the longevity of older global stars like Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown, yet try to push him out of the industry despite him being younger than them.
Defending his artistic relevance, Mr P reminded critics that his talent goes far beyond just recording tracks. He emphasized his versatility as a high-energy performer, dancer, and multi-instrumentalist who holds a formal music certificate—making it clear that he has no intention of slowing down.
Mr P wrote:
“Now he is too old to be singing and dancing.” Meanwhile, na the same people go celebrate and hype Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for doing the same thing.”
“Make una help me name any artiste wey dey sing, dance, perform at the highest level, still plays multiple musical instruments, and still get music certificate. Only Peter Okoye.
“Na why I always say: put some respect on the name Peter Okoye aka Mr P.
“One thing for sure, most of these people na PSQUARE heartbroken fans, and honestly, I understand their feelings. Them go dey alright las las. Nothing lasts forever. Change is constant. Respect our decision and move on”.
“As for this solo journey? It’s one of the best things that has ever happened in my life, and I honestly don’t care what anyone thinks”.
To cap it all off, the singer disclosed that he recently secured a massive five-year, multi-million-dollar deal with an international distribution company, a major career move that is set to cover his next three albums.
“I recently signed a multi-million-dollar 5-year deal with an international distribution company covering 3 albums.
“Nobody can stop this movement. The train has left the station. So it’s time to let go and move on. It’s Mr P Forever!”, he added.
The music duo P-Square, made up of twin brothers Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye, parted ways in 2017 after a long-running rift. Since then, both artistes have pursued separate music careers as solo artists.
