Renowned Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale has voiced sharp criticism over the perceived lack of support and financial appreciation for entertainers in Ghana, contrasting the industry's landscape with that of Nigeria.

Speaking as a guest on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, the reggae-dancehall artist asserted that Ghanaian celebrities often face widespread undervaluation. He revealed that compensation across the national entertainment sector remains severely inadequate, leaving many artists facing significant financial hardship despite achieving public renown.

Illustrating the gap between fame and financial stability, Shatta Wale recounted personal hardship during his early success. He revealed that despite being widely recognized across the country, he frequently relied on taxi services to attend performances and was, at one point, accommodated by his girlfriend at her family’s home due to financial limitations.

He said, “Nigerians appreciate success, Ghana doesn’t appreciate success. As a star, I was sleeping on the street as big as I am. At one point, my girlfriend who was living with her parents’ was the one accommodating me.

“Even as a big Ghanaian artist, back then, I take taxis to shows. Not just me, a lot of Ghanaian artists do that. Ghanaian artists earn pennies, while their Nigerian counterparts earn big.”

In closing, Shatta Wale urged his Ghanaian peers to take cues from their Nigerian counterparts by demanding higher industry standards, asserting that elevating expectations is key to securing greater respect and compensation for their work.
