The President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Uche Agbo, has urged insurance providers to abandon generalized frameworks and instead design bespoke policies tailored to the operational realities of the nation's entertainment sector.

Agbo made the call during a stakeholders' engagement forum organized by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, led by Ayomide Adeagbo, in partnership with Insurtainment, an initiative founded by Temitayo Akpan. The forum served as a strategic platform for policymakers, insurance executives, and creative leaders to explore sustainable, practical risk-management solutions for the sector.

Contributing to a panel discussion, Agbo lauded the initiative as a timely intervention to safeguard the future of Nigeria’s creative economy. He observed that conventional insurance products frequently fall short because they fail to align with the unique structure of the creative sector—where professionals typically navigate project-based contracts, irregular income streams, and specialized production risks.

“Filmmakers and other creatives need more than standard cover,” Agbo said. “We need comprehensive production insurance, as well as health and life insurance packages built for people in this industry.”

The DGN President identified several critical areas requiring specialized coverage, including errors and omissions (E&O), on-set accidents, equipment damage or theft, and production delays stemming from the sudden illness or absence of key talent. He also stressed the need for protection against project interruptions caused by environmental hazards, civil unrest, and other unforeseen disruptions, arguing that producers should not bear sole financial liability for circumstances beyond their control.

Furthermore, Agbo urged underwriters to streamline and expedite the claims process, noting that prompt payouts are essential to establishing institutional trust and driving industry-wide adoption. He commended the organizers for facilitating the dialogue and welcomed the participation of the Chairman of the House Committee on Insurance, who pledged legislative backing for policy recommendations emerging from the forum. Ultimately, the DGN President expressed optimism that robust collaboration between regulatory bodies, insurers, and industry stakeholders would establish a framework that protects practitioners while boosting investor confidence.

As Nollywood and Nigeria’s broader creative economy experience rapid expansion, Agbo emphasized that establishing a robust insurance infrastructure is no longer optional—it is a critical necessity.
