Wole Soyinka Secretly Settles ₦39 Million Medical Bill for Onyeka Nwelue

 Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka is drawing widespread praise online after Nigerian author and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue revealed how the literary icon quietly cleared his remaining hospital debt after a major knee surgery.

Taking to social media, Nwelue shared a touching account of how he informed Soyinka that his surgery cost ₦39 million in total, with ₦10 million still left to pay.

Soyinka didn't hesitate to step in, telling him: "Let me get to Lagos this Friday and see what I can send."

After Nwelue sent over the hospital's bank details, the Nobel Laureate followed up a few days later to make sure the transaction went through. Soyinka wrote: "Receiving no notification from you, I asked my bank for confirmation that the money has been sent. Forwarding the affirmation documents separately from the bank in case you need to track the funds… I just wish to ensure it’s landed in the right place."

Upon reaching out to the hospital, Nwelue was heartened to learn that the entire outstanding balance had been successfully settled.
