Ed Sheeran back on stage as Palestine controversy continues

Pop star Ed Sheeran is scheduled to return to the stage in Philadelphia today, amid controversy surrounding his US tour and the pro-Palestinian remarks of his former opening act, Macklemore.

Sheeran will perform at Lincoln Financial Field, near where a pro-Palestinian rally is also planned.

Macklemore was removed from Sheeran's "US Loop Tour" earlier this week after he shouted "Free Palestine" during a performance in New Jersey. The decision reportedly followed objections from the owners of stadiums hosting Sheeran's upcoming shows.

Sheeran has denied any involvement in the decision, saying the tour promoter was responsible. Four supporting acts have reportedly since left the tour, including Sheeran's backing band and musician Finneas.

Sheeran said he does not want his concerts to become political forums. In an Instagram statement on Tuesday, he said he holds personal views on the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank but chooses not to discuss them publicly.

Philadelphia police told AFP that an appropriate police presence would be in place around the venue to ensure the safety of concertgoers, employees and local residents.
