Santi Cazorla has backed Lamine Yamal in the Ballon d'Or race, arguing that the Barcelona teenager has done enough to deserve the prestigious individual prize.
Cazorla, one of Spain's most recognisable midfielders of his generation, was speaking to SPORT when asked who he would choose for the award.
His answer was immediate, with the Barcelona star's performances for both club and country forming the basis of his argument.
Cazorla makes his Ballon d'Or choice
The former Spain international believes Yamal's case should be judged on sporting merit rather than his age.
"I'd give the Ballon d'Or to Lamine. He plays for our country, he's Spanish, and he's more than earned the right to win it," said Cazorla.
Yamal has continued to establish himself as one of the leading young players in world football, playing a major role for Barcelona while also becoming an important figure for Spain.
Cazorla acknowledges that the final decision rests with the Ballon d'Or voters, but believes the teenager has already built a strong enough case.
"We're not the ones making the decisions, but on merit alone, it should be his."
Santi Cazorla impressed by Barcelona
Cazorla's praise did not end with Yamal. The Spanish veteran also spoke highly of Hansi Flick's Barcelona and the impact the club's young players have made.
"I love it. This Barça side is sweeping all before it at the start of the season. It has young players of an incredible standard," he explained.
The former Spain midfielder also admitted that he has enjoyed watching Barcelona this season, while hoping the title race remains competitive.
"I really enjoy watching Barça," added Cazorla, who is expecting a closely contested season:
"Let's hope La Liga proves entertaining for the fans," he concluded.
