‘I was really down, but I never wanted to end my life’ – Busola ‘Eleyele’ Oke

‘I was sad but never had suicidal thoughts’ – Busola ‘Eleyele’ Oke

Gospel singer Busola Oke has shut down rumours that she was thinking about suicide, explaining that people completely misread her recent emotional video.

Speaking on the Talk To B podcast, she clarified that she never said she planned to take her own life. Instead, she was just feeling very frustrated and lonely at the time. She described the whole situation as a massive misunderstanding that simply spiralled out of control.

“I never said I was going to commit suicide. It was a misinterpretation,” she said, stressing that her words were taken out of context.

The singer shared that she was just feeling completely wiped out and emotionally drained when she went live. She said she felt really down, lonely, and exhausted, as if she had absolutely no one there for her.

In that moment, she said, she simply wanted reassurance and connection. “I felt very strange and lonely, like nobody was there. I was exhausted, so I went live,” she explained.

During the video, Oke said she asked if anyone actually cared about her. She asked friends to share the clip and tag others, not to show off, but just because she really needed to see some love and support.

“And I said, I was saying, is there anybody out there that cares about me? I just want to see people that love me. And I started talking to my friends. They started reaching out. I said, ‘Please share this video and tag.’ Just show me you love me. I’m here. These people started talking to me. I’m so glad they’re here for you and all that. They started sharing the video.

However, she mentioned that somewhere along the way, the story changed. What she meant to be a private moment to vent to her friends turned into everyone gossiping and worrying about her mental health.

“And all of a sudden, I don’t know what,” somebody said. I never planned to expose myself. I’ve always been someone who doesn’t like to talk.”

However, she said that somewhere along the way, the story changed.

The gospel singer also shared that she has been through a lot of hard times since 2020 but chose to keep quiet about it. She explained that she didn't want to speak out because she hates the idea of people feeling sorry for her or treating her like a sob story.

“I don’t want people to treat me like a pity party. I prefer people to be natural around me,” she said, explaining that this desire for normalcy kept her from sharing her story earlier.

Oke finished by saying that although she was really sad during the video, people shouldn't have taken it as a suicide note. For her, it was just a moment where she felt a bit fragile and was reaching out for a bit of love, rather than a sign that she was going to hurt herself.
