"Glititz, Glamour, and Cinema: Lagos Takes Center Stage for AMVCA 2026 Tonight"
After months of preparation and the tailoring of bespoke outfits for the big night, Africa’s leading film stars are descending on the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos tonight for the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Hosted by comedian Bovi and South African actress Nomalizo Mbatha, the ceremony promises a night of spectacular performances and sensational red-carpet fashion for both the guests in attendance and those watching from home.
The pairing of Bovi and Mbatha marks a significant departure from tradition. They take over hosting duties from IK Osakioduwa, who has enjoyed an uninterrupted 11-year run since the awards first launched in 2013. Having become the face of the AMVCAs, Osakioduwa is finally stepping aside after anchoring every ceremony since its inception.
Expectations are incredibly high as Bovi and Mbatha prepare to step into his shoes and uphold the prestigious standard he established.

The night is set to be a spectacular celebration of African cinema, with millions of viewers across the continent expected to tune in to watch the event unfold. As is tradition, this year’s AMVCA includes categories such as Best Movie, Best Director, Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Picture, among many others.
Which film will take home the night?
"Ginger" and "The Herd" are the frontrunners this year, each picking up nine nominations across the acting, directing, and technical categories. Directed by Daniel Effiong-Effiong, "The Herd" is a 2025 crime thriller that tackles the long-standing security issues that have plagued Nigeria for decades. Its release stirred up significant controversy in the north, leading some young people to call for the film to be banned.
The backlash eventually died down after the film was recognised as a raw and honest portrayal of the crisis the country has faced for years. With that momentum behind it, "The Herd" could well sweep several of the night’s major awards.
Close behind is "Ginger", a sharp crime-comedy produced by industry heavyweights Kiekie, Bisola Aiyeola, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wunmi Toriola.
Following its premieres in London and the US, the film has earned praise for keeping audiences on the edge of their seats throughout. With nine nominations of its own, "Ginger" looks set to give "The Herd" a serious run for its money.
Other strong contenders include "To Kill A Monkey," which earned eight nominations, and "My Father’s Shadow," which secured seven across various categories. Meanwhile, Funke Akindele’s "Behind The Scenes" remains a significant presence in the race with five nominations.

This year’s AMVCA features a total of 32 categories: 18 decided by the jury, 11 chosen by public vote, and three special recognition awards. This balanced mix ensures the ceremony is a comprehensive celebration of excellence across African film and television.
Spotlight on Best Actor and Best Actress
The Best Actor category is shaping up to be one of the most competitive of the night. With established names like Kanayo O. Kanayo, Femi Branch, Mike Ezuruonye, Lateef Adedimeji, and last year’s winner Wale Ojo all in the running, the race is incredibly tough to call. However, one thing is certain: one of these heavyweight nominees will be heading home with the trophy tonight.
In contrast, the Best Actress race seems more clear-cut. Linda Ejiofor appears to be the frontrunner for her performance in "The Serpent’s Gift." Remarkably, she is also a strong favourite for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Herd."
That being said, the wider Best Actress shortlist is packed with talent. With stars like Sola Sobowale, Gloria Anozia-Young, Scarlet Gomez, Genevieve Umoh, Bimbo Akintola, Ileoma Fashunwa, and Ariyike Owolagba all in the running, the category is still bound to provide plenty of drama tonight.
Dazzling on the red carpet
One of the night’s most anticipated highlights will be the red carpet outside the Eko Hotels Convention Centre, where celebrities will take turns showcasing bespoke looks from some of the biggest names in fashion. For many stars, turning heads comes with a hefty price tag, as they spend small fortunes to ensure they stand out from the crowd.
Last year set a high bar with a mixture of avant-garde, traditional, and elegant styles. Ghanaian actress and model Nana Akua Addo stunned in a rotating sculptural dress, while socialite Pretty Mike caused a stir in a futuristic, silver-toned “Andromeda” exosuit that channeled Terminator vibes and quickly went viral.
Other memorable looks came from Osas Ighodaro, Doyin David, and Mercy Aigbe, as Nollywood stars fully embraced bold African couture.
That same energy is expected tonight. As the stars begin to arrive, anticipation is building for what the evening has in store.
