Nigerian environmentalist and conservationist Rachel Ikemeh has been named a 2026 Rolex Awards Laureate, a prestigious global recognition celebrating her community-driven initiatives to protect biodiversity, preserve threatened species, and support local economies in the Niger Delta.
Driven by the severe crude oil pollution she witnessed in 2013, Ikemeh established the South-West/Niger Delta Forest Project (SWNDFP). The initiative partners closely with local communities to restore degraded forest habitats and safeguard endangered wildlife. A key milestone of the project includes salvaging the critically endangered Niger Delta red colobus monkey; by establishing a 1,000-hectare community-protected sanctuary, Ikemeh's team successfully doubled the population of the species, which had dwindled to just 200 individuals in 2021.
To date, the SWNDFP manages four distinct conservation zones that protect 13 threatened species. The organization has also delivered a tangible socio-economic impact, improving the livelihoods of over 2,500 people and reaching more than 18,000 individuals through targeted environmental education and awareness campaigns.
With the financial and structural support of the Rolex Awards, Ikemeh aims to scale her organization’s impact. Her strategic roadmap includes:
- Establishing four additional community-led conservation areas.
- Launching a dedicated regional conservation training hub.
- Deploying a mobile environmental education program.
- Spearheading the creation of the Niger Delta's first locally managed marine protected area.
Through these expanded initiatives, Ikemeh continues to build a sustainable conservation framework while mentoring the next generation of environmental leaders dedicated to safeguarding Nigeria's natural heritage.
