You Are Either A Mainstream Rising Artist Or An Underground Rising Artist
Every word in a topic carries weight. So before we go further, let’s define the two words at the heart of this: _Mainstream_ and _Underground_.
An _underground rising artist_ is a performer whose music is heard and streamed by a small but dedicated group. They are known locally. They build fanbase one person at a time. They fund their own studio sessions, their own videos, and earn little or nothing from streaming platforms.
A _mainstream rising artist_ is moving fast from that niche into widespread commercial recognition. The general public knows their name. Their songs are on national playlists, TikTok trends, and radio.
The difference is not just talent. It’s resources.
The Two Realities
As an underground artist, it’s unfair to compare yourself to a mainstream rising artist. You’re operating in two completely different economies.
Funding: Underground artists pay for studio time from their own pockets. Mainstream artists have record labels investing millions of naira into production, mixing, mastering, and video.
Team: Underground artists do everything themselves — branding, content, DMing bloggers, booking shows. Mainstream artists have managers, PR agencies, digital teams, and lawyers handling documentation and rights.
Access: Mainstream artists get direct lines to A-list producers, video directors, OAPs, and global playlist curators through their label. Underground artists rely on grassroots credibility, or struggle to raise the fees for those same producers and influencers.
Marketing: Mainstream campaigns pay top TikTok, Instagram and Facebook influencers for sponsored posts and reposts. Underground artists depend on organic posts and word of mouth.
Catalog: Mainstream artists already have songs pulling algorithmic weight on Spotify and Apple Music. Underground artists are still building that catalog locally, and rarely see streaming revenue.
If you try to compete without the same resources, it leads to frustration and self-doubt.
So Where Are We Now in Nigeria?
Based on current chart performance, streaming data, and industry backing, here are Nigerian artists I classify as _mainstream rising_ in 2026:
- Fola - Broke out with his chart-topping hit "Alone" featuring BhadBoi OML, and first gained attention with his 2022 debut "Ginger Me" featuring Bella Shmurda.
- Ayo Maff – Rose with street storytelling and collaborations like “Dealer”.
- Qing Madi – Blending Afrobeats and R&B. Broke out virally with “Ole”.
- Shoday – Major streaming records like “Paparazzi”. Domestic and international traction.
- TML Vibez – Signed to Seyi Vibez’s Vibez Inc. Street-pop energy.
- Khaid – Neville Records artist with melodic, pop-inflected street hits.
- Zerry DL – Headies Rookie of the Year. Heavy backing from Shallipopi.
- Famous Pluto – Entered mainstream under Plutomania with “Na Scra”.
If your name is not on a list like this yet, you are likely still in the underground phase. And that’s not an insult. It’s a diagnosis.
The Way Forward
The facts are clear. Nobody can decide this for you.
The gap between underground and mainstream is not talent. It’s structure, funding, and strategy.
To cross over, underground artists must think like a business: build a team, document your rights, invest in quality production, and leverage every small win into data that attracts a label or investor.
The music industry rewards artists who understand both the art and the business.
The decision is yours. Work smarter. Move with intention. And metamorphose.
