Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda Automatically Qualify for AFCON 2027

The qualification process for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially commenced, with 21 berths remaining to complete the final 24-team lineup.
Officially designated as the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027, the 36th edition of the tournament marks a historic milestone as the first to be hosted jointly across three nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Automatic Qualification for Co-Hosts
Under the operational title "Pamoja"—the Swahili word for "together"—the three host nations have received automatic qualification, securing direct entry into the finals without competing through the group stage qualification rounds.
- Kenya: Co-hosting fixtures centered at Nairobi’s Talanta Stadium.
- Tanzania: Serving as the primary host country, with matches anchored at Dar es Salaam’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
- Uganda: Hosting tournament matches at Kampala’s Mandela National Stadium.
Qualification Framework for Remaining 21 Berths
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) retains its standard 24-team final tournament structure.
To determine the remaining participants, 48 African nations are allocated across 12 qualifying groups (Groups A through L):
- Standard Qualifying Groups (9 Groups): For the nine groups containing no host nations, the top two finishing teams in each group secure direct qualification, filling 18 tournament slots.
- Host Qualifying Groups (Groups D, H, and L): Because Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania participate in the qualification rounds despite holding automatic berths, modified rules govern these groups. In each of these three groups, only the single highest-ranked non-host team will advance to the finals.
This allocation framework ensures that precisely 21 teams qualify through competitive merit, completing the 24-nation field ahead of the tournament's kickoff in mid-2027.
