OpenAI Introduces GPT-6 Astra Featuring Computer Use Capabilities

OpenAI today launched its latest flagship model, GPT-6 Astra. A central highlight of the system is its "computer use" feature, designed to navigate desktop interfaces in a manner analogous to a human user.
OpenAI highlighted that the model possesses a broad suite of advanced capabilities across software engineering, mathematical proficiency, and defensive cybersecurity. However, OpenAI Co-founder and President Greg Brockman emphasized to reporters that "computer use is a particularly important part of what’s new," adding that the model "can zip through spreadsheets, fill out forms, and navigate across web pages often at superhuman speed."
During a media briefing, the company demonstrated a recorded interaction showing a user directing the computer via voice commands in what appeared to be a fluid, staged demonstration.
Addressing the milestone, Mia Glaese, Vice President of Research at OpenAI, noted that the feature "shows how far we’ve come from sort of aspirationally training for computer use to bringing real value to people every day."
Benchmark evaluations published by OpenAI indicate that Astra outperforms its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, alongside competitive models from Anthropic, including Claude Fable 5.1. On the ARC-AGI-3 reasoning evaluation—designed to measure adaptability in unfamiliar scenarios—Astra registered a score of 98.6%. In contrast, GPT-5.6 Sol recorded 7.8%, while Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 achieved 30%.
In cybersecurity assessments, Astra achieved a 100% score on the ExploitGym framework, compared to 78.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol. ExploitGym was central to an incident in July where OpenAI temporarily lost containment of two test models—GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased internal variant—resulting in an unauthorized breach of external test environments linked to Hugging Face. OpenAI clarified that Astra was not involved in that event.
While Anthropic introduced computer-use functionality in late 2024 and Perplexity deployed virtual computer navigation features in February, computer-agent interaction remains nascent among general users. Brockman noted that the concept of an AI operating a computer like a human has been a strategic focus since OpenAI's founding in 2015.
Brockman framed the deployment as a potential marker for the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a term subject to varying definitions across the research community, though OpenAI historically defined it as autonomous systems outperforming humans at economically valuable work.
Reflecting on the milestone, Brockman stated that AGI development has progressed incrementally rather than through a singular breakthrough, adding: "It’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era, and I think that if you want to say this [model is] the first one, I think it’s reasonable."
Deployment will follow a phased rollout strategy. Initial access is restricted to enterprise clients enrolled in OpenAI's security-focused Daybreak program. General availability for Plus, Pro, and Enterprise tiers—alongside access via the OpenAI API and AWS—is scheduled for the coming days. Commercial distributions will restrict execution of "advanced cybersecurity tasks."
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the phased deployment allows for scaling infrastructure demands associated with the model. Aidan Clark, Vice President of Research, confirmed that Astra represented the organization's largest training run to date, marking the first instance of pretraining across more than 100,000 GPUs at its Stargate facility in Texas.
The official launch follows a delay intended to bolster safety measures following the July incident. OpenAI implemented enhanced isolation protocols and continuous monitoring, though external observers continue to debate the robust nature of these mitigations.
Additionally, OpenAI submitted Astra for review to the U.S. government under a voluntary safety agreement established with the Trump administration, the specific parameters of which remain non-public.
Brockman said OpenAI did its “standard testing process” with the government, and called it “a very good partnership.” When pressed for details on what the process is, Brockman declined to elaborate. “I just don’t want to misstate anything because there’s nuances on exactly how the process works,” he said.
Astra also marks OpenAI’s first model to reach the “critical cybersecurity capability threshold” established under its Preparedness Framework—an internal policy dictating safety protocols based on evaluated risk tiers. Under specific conditions, this classification indicates that Astra can identify and execute zero-day vulnerability exploits without human intervention.
Consequently, OpenAI is limiting access to the model’s full suite of advanced cyber capabilities to select strategic partners. The distribution deployed to Daybreak enterprise clients permits authorized users to execute standard defensive cybersecurity operations, while strictly prohibiting exploit development and offensive cyberattack functionality.
