Grammy-winning sensation Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has offered a candid look into her philosophy on marriage, arguing that a union should be driven by a shared desire for growth rather than fleeting emotions.

Speaking with media personality Angie Martinez, Tems noted that because marriage inevitably faces seasons of hardship, it must be approached with the sober realization that things won't always be "rosy." Due to this unpredictability, the singer emphasized her preference for a God-fearing partner, noting that such an individual possesses a sense of spiritual accountability that sustains a relationship when feelings fail.

“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?

“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she stated.
