 Afrobeats superstar Davido has reflected on his remarkable rise to fame, pointing out his unusual path as an artist who reached international stardom despite coming from money.

In a recent interview with Vibe Magazine, the Nigerian singer—whose real name is David Adeleke—opened up about his move into music and his drive to become one of Africa’s biggest cultural exports.

Whilst acknowledging that his background doesn't fit the classic "grass-to-grace" story so popular across the continent, Adeleke stressed that he has still managed to forge his own identity and build an independent legacy in the global music scene.

“Africa loves the grass-to-grace story. The young boy that was poor and became rich. But not to brag, which other billionaire child do you know in the world who has made a name for himself and also made a lot of money? You can’t name one aside from me,” Davido told Vibe Magazine.

The singer comes from a prominent background as the son of billionaire tycoon Chief Adedeji Adeleke, whose business empire spans energy, infrastructure, and education.

The Adeleke family also holds considerable political influence in Nigeria, with his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, currently serving as the Governor of Osun State.

Even with a comfortable background, Davido noted that choosing a career in music initially met with resistance from his father.

He ultimately launched his debut single in 2011, kicking off a stellar career that has now spanned more than 15 years.
