‘The Odyssey’ Becomes Christopher Nolan’s Third $1 Billion Box Office Milestone

 The Epic Joins The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises in the $1 Billion Club

Fourteen years after his last billion-dollar feature, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has returned to the milestone as Universal and Syncopy’s The Odyssey becomes the fifth release of 2026 to surpass $1 billion in global box office receipts.

The Homeric epic—starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway—crossed the threshold on its fourth Friday in theaters. Projecting a domestic weekend pull between $25 million and $35 million, the film is set to push its North American cumulative total past $450 million. This performance represents another week-over-week decline under 50%, even after surrendering full exclusivity of premium large formats to Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Sustained consumer demand for specialized presentation formats—particularly IMAX 70mm and analog engagements—has anchored the film's theatrical longevity. The foundation for its $1 billion trajectory was established during its second weekend, when it generated $227 million globally while recording a minimal 3% drop in international territories and a 27% decline domestically—the lowest second-weekend domestic drop on record for an opening above $100 million.

The Odyssey marks Nolan’s third directorial effort to reach the billion-dollar milestone, following The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). The production is now positioned to challenge the all-time box office record for an R-rated title, currently held by Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.33 billion).

The feature's commercial momentum is anticipated to continue as it expands across key Asian territories, beginning with its release in South Korea this weekend. A theatrical rollout in China follows on August 14—preceded by a widely circulated promotional interview between Nolan and podcaster Zhong Shu—ahead of a September release in Japan.

Should total earnings pass $1.36 billion, The Odyssey will surpass The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2023) to become Universal Pictures' third-highest-grossing release unadjusted for inflation, trailing only Jurassic World ($1.67 billion) and Furious 7 ($1.51 billion).

Additionally, current tracking indicates the film is on pace to eclipse The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion) to become the highest-grossing release of Nolan’s career.
